Enduro is coming. I think I’ll go slang hunting

November brings mountain bikers and gnarly lingo memories to Mount Nebo

One of my favorite memories of cycling in the 80’s and 90’s was listening to the lingo my dad and his cycling buddies would use while on the road or just hanging out. You may ride a “tricked out” bike but don’t be a “half-wheeler”. Check before you fire your “snot-rocket”. You’re going to “bonk” if you don’t pace yourself. And such.

My first (and only) race. I got absolutely pummeled. Pummeled, I tell you.

While road cycling in Yell County is still something I would recommend only to those who wish to die, mountain bikers have a safe (from traffic) home here on Mount Nebo. I have often wondered if I could use the trails there to get me back on a bike and perhaps shake loose some memories of my dad that have gathered dust. Perhaps, too, I can scrounge up some new slang to energize my spoken vocabulary, which has taken on the oral equivalent of a dad bod.

The Arkansas Enduro Series is a series of mountain bike races that happen in Bentonville/Bella Vista, Eureka Springs, Hot Springs, and lastly Mount Nebo (just 20 minutes drive from Sulphur Springs Truck Patch.) Having a history of cycling in the family it always delights me to know so many bikes (and the characters who ride them) will be nearby for short while.

Let’s go slang collecting on November 21-22 on Mount Nebo! In the meantime, below is a little cartoon I created for SSTP’s YouTube.
